Warawewa says the Sri Lankan judiciary could be independent if there was no political interference and there is a necessity for a force void of political affiliations to clean up the judiciary.
Speaking at an event organized by the National Movement for a Just Society, Warawewa has said the 17th Amendment to the Constitution needs to be implemented in order to create an independent judiciary.
He has observed that the right person needs to be assigned to do a proper job and that most often it is the other way around.
It is not only the person who steals a plantain or a coconut that needs to be punished. The relief received by politicians who commit murder is not offered to the common man," he has said.
According to Warawewa, the judiciary needs to protect the people and the judiciary could not function if the people did not have confidence in it.
e has noted that the judiciary faces interference from various elements in such instances.
