By Saman IndrajithUNP National list MP D. M. Swaminathan said in parliament yesterday that the Sri Lankan Government blew the resolution, brought against it at the UNHRC, out of proportion.
"The United States had invited the Sri Lankan authorities to join them to draft the Resolution. The United States throughout supported the Sri Lankan Domestic mechanism. The Government had spent colossal sums of money and energy to knock their head against a rock, the US Government," he said while speaking during the adjournment motion on the resolution.
He added the Resolution simply called upon the Government of Sri Lanka to implement the salient features and comments made in the LLRC Report.
He also referred to the statements issued by Government Ministers independently without a cohesive policy statement. "The so called policy statement was that no foreign country should meddle in the Sri Lankan affairs. If that is the position of the Sri Lankan Government it should immediately resign from UN membership," he added.
However, he said that this was not a feasible proposition because Sri Lanka, as per Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe, on the 30th of May 2011, at the UNHCR Council sessions, stated that Sri Lanka takes seriously its rights, obligations and duties and accords great importance to its engagements with the UN system and especially with the august body.
The MP added that a proper International Relationship should be formulated to safeguard the rights and interests of the Sri Lankan citizens.
