Kelaniya PS men want police protection

Mervyn Silva’s goons run amok, KPS members allege
By Ajith Pushpakumara

The political rivalries in Kelaniya are escalating as the Kelaniya Pradeshiya Sabha (KPS) members are gearing to retaliate against Minister Mervyn Silva’s goons – if the police fails to provide protection for their families.
KPS chairman Prasanna Ranaweera has lodged a complaint with Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa and IGP N.K. Illangakoon following an alleged goon squad linked to Minister Silva having damaged KPS vice chairman Chamila Duminda’s house and stealing Rs.2 million belonging to him, in addition to threatening his wife on Friday (April 27).

Chamila Duminda charged that Minister Silva has appointed goons brought from outside Kelaniya to man key posts within the KPS and the Kelaniya electorate, and said that if the police were to turn a blind eye to their current plight, they will be forced to take to the streets with the public in order to protect themselves.
The KPS chairman in his complaint has stated that all members of the KPS continue to live in fear for their lives due to goons being allegedly unleashed on them by Minister Silva, for having opposed his continued presence in the Kelaniya electorate as the chief organizer of the SLFP.
When contacted, Mervyn Silva said that he had nothing to do with the alleged incident and that those members of the KPS under Prasanna Ranaweera have become too big for their boots.
He charged that KPS members led by Ranaweera, being unable to accept his style of leadership, were out to oust him from Kelaniya, and challenged them to do so if possible.
