Former Deputy Leader of the UNP, Karu Jayasuriya told a public gathering that public funds are being wasted in large quantities in the public sector, especially by the public representatives.
He observed that powerful political figures were even behind the drug business in the country and authorities therefore could not take any action.
He explained that the country's public sector has been greatly politicized and the public servants including the police cannot carry out their work with dignity.
According to Jayasuriya, the UNP tried to prevent the politicization of the public sector and the police and to create an environment for them to work independently by introducing the 17th Amendment to the Constitution.
However, he noted that the introduction of the 18th Amendment to the Constitution has now created a mess.
